A rolling monthly rental can be handed back at the end of a tour without the hassle of selling a car in a small second-hand market.
Car subscriptions in Cyprus
One monthly payment. No long tie-ins. An independent, editorial guide to car subscription and flexible lease providers in Cyprus.
For British service personnel and their families posted to the Sovereign Base Areas at Akrotiri, Episkopi and Dhekelia, getting a car sorted quickly is one of the first jobs on arrival.
Postings are often two to three years, and sometimes much shorter, so the choice is usually between bringing or importing a car, buying locally and selling on departure, or using a flexible monthly rental or short lease that can be handed back when you leave.
Cyprus has no large consumer car-subscription brand of the kind found in northern Europe, but established firms offer close equivalents. Hertz Cyprus runs Flex Drive, a rolling monthly rental with insurance, road tax and maintenance included, and Petsas offers leases from three months. Because Cyprus drives on the left, UK right-hand-drive habits carry over, and most local cars are right-hand drive too.

Servicing, repairs, tyres and roadside assistance are typically included, which helps if one partner is deployed.

Rolling monthly rental with insurance, road tax and 2,000 km included
Flex Drive is Hertz Cyprus's rolling monthly rental, the closest thing on the island to a car subscription. You rent from one month and keep the car as long as you like, ending it by emailing Hertz at least six days before the rental month ends. The fixed monthly fee includes 2,000 km, comprehensive and theft insurance with an excess, road tax, maintenance, repairs, tyres and 24-hour assistance. Cars are one to four years old. You pay the first month plus a deposit of two months' rent. It suits forces families and others on postings of uncertain length.
Minimum term: 1 month
Lower-cost 12-month rental priced per day, with 2,000 km a month
Alongside Flex Drive, Hertz Cyprus offers monthly rental deals based on a 12-month commitment, priced from about €14 a day for a Kia Picanto up to €70 a day for an Audi Q5, including VAT. Offers include collision damage waiver and theft cover with an excess, 2,000 km a month, roadside assistance, maintenance and repairs and a replacement car on breakdown. Three months' payments are taken as a deposit, which is kept if you end before 12 months. It suits personnel with a confirmed posting of at least a year who want a lower monthly cost.

Petsas Car Leasing is the leasing arm of A. Petsas & Sons, a Cypriot rental company established in 1962. It offers leases from three months up to several years, with annual mileage from 10,000 km to unlimited. You choose between scheduled-only or full maintenance, and between third-party, comprehensive or comprehensive with fire and theft insurance. Guide
Contact the provider, choose a car category and pay the first month plus a deposit (often two or three months' rent). Licence requirements vary: Hertz Flex Drive accepts Cypriot, European or international licences held for at least a year, with minimum ages of 21 or 25 depending on the car. For civilians living in Cyprus, GOV.UK says a UK licence can be used for six months before it must be exchanged; service personnel and dependants should confirm the arrangements that apply to them under SBA rules with their unit or the SBA Administration, and should not assume an old BFG (Germany) licence is valid. Fuel is extra.
Business
Most forces families rent privately, but contractors and civilians working at the bases may need vehicles through an employer. Hertz offers business monthly rental and leasing, and Petsas leases to companies. Duty and tax-free vehicle schemes administered by SBA Customs may apply to entitled persons; check eligibility with the SBA Fiscal Office before buying or importing.
GOV.UK says visitors can drive on a UK photocard licence, and civilian residents must exchange it within six months. Service personnel and families should check the specific SBA arrangements with their unit or the SBA Administration.
For short postings a monthly rental is usually simpler, as it avoids shipping, customs and resale. For longer tours, entitled persons may benefit from duty and tax-free schemes, so compare total costs.
The left, as in the UK, with most cars right-hand drive.
Hertz Flex Drive includes comprehensive and theft insurance with an excess. Check whether cover extends to the northern part of the island.
Hertz says a Flex Drive car can be ready within 24 hours of a confirmed request, subject to availability.
