Monthly motoring with most running costs bundled in, on terms that can start at 28 days. Here is what to know before you sign, whether you are driving for yourself or for a business.
The UK has one of the busier car subscription markets in Europe.
Providers include specialist subscription firms, leasing brokers with flexible products, rental companies offering monthly plans, and car makers selling their own models directly. Minimum terms among the UK providers we track range from 28 days to around three months, and some agreements run for up to three or four years.
Because the word subscription covers so many different products, two offers with a similar headline price can be very different underneath. One may include fully comprehensive insurance and a generous mileage allowance; another may cover only tax and servicing and expect you to arrange insurance yourself. This guide sets out the moving parts so you can compare like with like.
Subscription vs lease vs PCP vs rentalWhy subscribe
Many UK agreements start at one month or 28 days, and a number of providers offer three-month minimums. After that, rolling monthly terms are common.
Vehicle tax, servicing and breakdown assistance are frequently included. Some providers also bundle insurance, which removes the need to buy an annual policy for a short-term car.
Several providers ask for no deposit or a refundable one, subject to status. Long-term leases, by contrast, usually require an initial rental of several monthly payments.
A few months behind the wheel shows whether charging fits your routine before you commit to a multi-year agreement or a purchase.
Subscriptions are often used during a relocation, a new job's probation period, while waiting for a car on order, or while a company sorts out a fleet change.
Many providers will contract with sole traders, partnerships and limited companies, and some offer consolidated invoicing across several vehicles.

Guides
A subscription can be a sensible stopgap, a trial run or a long-term way to avoid owning a car. It can also be an expensive habit if your needs are stable. This guide helps you work out which applies to you.
For many businesses, the hardest vehicles to manage are the temporary ones. Subscriptions give you a car for weeks or months without signing a multi-year contract. Here is how they work in a business setting and what to check.
How it works
You choose a car and a term, agree a monthly mileage allowance and pass the provider's checks, which usually cover identity, driving licence, address and affordability. The provider then delivers the car or arranges collection. For the length of the agreement you pay a fixed monthly fee, and the provider looks after the items listed as included. When you want to finish, you give the notice set out in your contract, and the car is inspected against the provider's return standards. Any excess mileage or damage beyond fair wear and tear is charged at that point.
Work out roughly how long you need a car, how many miles you drive a month and whether you want insurance included. These three answers narrow the field quickly.
Line up minimum term, notice period, mileage, deposit, insurance and excess mileage charges side by side rather than relying on the headline monthly price.
Expect to supply your licence, proof of address and possibly bank statements. Ask whether the credit search is soft or hard before you apply.
Check the car on arrival, note any marks on the handover report and take dated photos. This protects you when the car goes back.
Follow the notice rules in your agreement, clean the car, gather the keys and documents, and be present at the inspection if you can.
Compare
Each option suits a different length of need and appetite for commitment. The table shows the typical position in the UK market; individual agreements can differ, so always check the contract in front of you.

Among the providers we track, the shortest minimum terms are 28 days, with several others starting at one month. Some products marketed as subscriptions have three-month or longer minimums, so check before you apply.
It depends on the provider. Some include fully comprehensive insurance in the monthly fee, some offer it as an optional extra and some expect you to arrange your own. If you insure the car yourself, the provider will normally require fully comprehensive cover.
Vehicle tax is usually paid by the provider as the registered keeper and built into the monthly fee. Confirm this in the list of inclusions.
You agree a monthly allowance when you sign. Packages of around 1,000 miles a month are common, and some providers let you buy more. Miles over the allowance are charged at a pence-per-mile rate set out in your agreement.
A hard credit search is recorded on your file and visible to other lenders, while a soft search is not visible to them. Ask which type the provider uses. Some products are structured so that the agreement itself does not appear as credit.
Some UK providers specifically cater for expats, overseas directors and new arrivals, usually asking for extra documents or a larger deposit. Availability varies, so ask before applying.
Some providers allow European travel with notice and the right paperwork, and others do not permit it at all. You will usually need written permission from the owner and suitable insurance and breakdown cover.
Several providers offer swaps, sometimes after a minimum period and sometimes for a fee. Swapping may restart a minimum term, so read the terms.
You give notice, return the car and it is inspected. Any charges for extra mileage, missing items or damage beyond fair wear and tear are then invoiced, and any refundable deposit is returned net of those amounts.
Some subscription and hire agreements are regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and some fall outside regulation, depending on how they are structured. You can check whether a firm is authorised on the FCA register at register.fca.org.uk.
