Car Subscriptions in Hungary

Car subscription is still a young idea in Hungary. Most drivers buy their cars outright or finance them, and companies traditionally rely on operational leasing (operatív lízing) for fleets.

Over the past few years, however, rental and leasing groups have introduced shorter, all-inclusive monthly products, and Budapest is where most of this activity is concentrated.

The clearest example of a true subscription is SIXT+, which offers 1 to 12-month commitments with Casco insurance, maintenance and roadside assistance bundled. Ayvens offers short-term company car rental from one month, and Toyota's KINTO sells long-term rental through the Toyota and Lexus dealer network. A local start-up, Swapp, once offered monthly swappable cars in Budapest, but its current website focuses on the Gulf region, so check availability directly. Prices are quoted in forints, usually both gross and net of VAT.

Hungary

Why choose a car subscription in Hungary?

Casco and compulsory insurance included

Subscriptions bundle mandatory third-party insurance (kötelező) and Casco cover, which can be costly to buy separately.

Seasonal tyre changes handled

Winter and summer tyre preparation is typically part of the package, which is useful given Hungarian winters.

No large down payment

Unlike many finance deals, subscriptions usually start with a contract fee and the first month's payment.

Flexibility for projects and newcomers

Monthly plans suit expats, project workers and companies with temporary staff.

Predictable costs

A fixed monthly fee covering maintenance and repairs makes budgeting easier in a period of rising service costs.

Guide

How car subscriptions work in Hungary

Providers in Hungary generally require a valid driving licence, ID or passport, an address and a payment method in your name, and they may carry out a credit or document check. Minimum age rules vary by provider and car category. Monthly mileage is chosen at signing, with overage charges at the end of the contract. Cars are usually collected from a branch in Budapest or another major city, and fuel is paid separately.

Things to check before you subscribe

  • Check whether prices are gross or net of VAT (27% in Hungary).
  • Confirm how a 'month' is defined; some providers use 28-day periods.
  • Ask about the Casco excess and what damage you pay for at return.
  • Compare the monthly kilometre allowance with your typical driving.
  • Check whether the car can be driven abroad and under what conditions.

Business

Car subscriptions for business

Hungarian companies widely use operational leasing and short-term rental, and lease payments are generally treated as business costs. Company car tax (cégautóadó) applies to company-owned and leased passenger cars, and VAT deductibility depends on how the vehicle is used. Ask your accountant (könyvelő) how a subscription would be treated for your business.
