Italian motor insurance (RC Auto) can be expensive, especially for younger drivers and in some southern provinces. Subscriptions usually include liability cover and often Kasko and theft protection in the monthly fee.
Car subscriptions in Italy
One monthly payment. No long tie-ins. An independent, editorial guide to car subscription and flexible lease providers in Italy.
Italy has one of Europe's most developed markets for long-term rental (noleggio a lungo termine), and over the past few years that tradition has produced a genuine subscription segment.
Captive finance brands and rental groups now sell month-to-month or short fixed-term plans in which insurance, maintenance and road tax are bundled into one fee, often with no down payment.
The best-known product is Drivalia's CarCloud, which pioneered rolling monthly car subscriptions in Italy, alongside SIXT+, Ayvens Flex and Leasys' pay-per-use and early-return formulas. Offers are concentrated in large cities such as Milan, Rome and Turin, where many residents drive less and face access restrictions in historic centres. Prices are typically quoted including VAT for private customers and excluding VAT for businesses, so compare like with like.
Italy
Italian motor insurance (RC Auto) can be expensive, especially for younger drivers and in some southern provinces. Subscriptions usually include liability cover and often Kasko and theft protection in the monthly fee.
Many Italian subscriptions start without an anticipo, unlike traditional long-term rental deals that often require a sizeable upfront payment.
Road tax (bollo auto), scheduled servicing and tyres are typically managed by the provider, so there are no separate annual bills to track.
Subscribing to a hybrid or electric car can help with city access rules such as Milan's Area B and Area C or other ZTL limited-traffic zones, though access always depends on local rules and permits.
Rolling monthly plans suit people who only need a car for part of the year, for example during a work assignment or summer months.
A short subscription is a low-risk way to test an electric car before taking on a multi-year rental or purchase.

Rolling monthly car subscription from Drivalia, with insurance and maintenance bundled
CarCloud is the subscription line of Drivalia, the rental and mobility arm of CA Auto Bank. Plans run month to month for up to a year, and can be cancelled after the first 30 days without penalty. A recent CarCloud Electric offer included 2,000 km a month, liability insurance with Kasko and theft cover, and ordinary and extraordinary maintenance, with no down payment and an enrolment fee. Cars are collected and swapped at Drivalia Mobility Stores with 48 hours' notice. Packages change seasonally, so check the current line-up.

Pay-per-kilometre long-term rental for drivers who use the car only occasionally
Leasys, the Stellantis-linked rental company, offers Leasys Miles as a pay-per-use alternative to a classic subscription. The monthly fee includes the first 1,000 km and you then pay for the kilometres you actually drive. Liability cover, theft and fire, damage repair cover, ordinary and extraordinary maintenance and roadside assistance are included. Contracts are long-term (offers have shown 36 months), so it is less flexible than a monthly plan but suits low-mileage drivers. Leasys also offers Be Free, which allows early return between months 12 and 24 without penalty.
Fixed-term car subscription for 3, 6 or 12 months from rental group SIXT
SIXT+ is the car subscription from rental group SIXT. In Italy you choose a 3, 6 or 12-month term; the contract ends automatically and early termination is not allowed, though you can pause or switch models. The base price covers road tax, servicing and wear, third-party liability insurance, inspection and registration, with a basic kilometre allowance and optional larger packages. A one-off enrolment fee of up to 149 euros applies depending on term, and airport or station pick-ups carry a surcharge. Business customers get discounts and invoice payment.

Guide
To subscribe in Italy you normally need a valid driving licence (EU licences are accepted; non-EU drivers should check whether an international permit or conversion is needed), a codice fiscale, an Italian or EU bank card in your name and, often, a credit check. Minimum ages commonly range from 19 to 25 depending on the provider and vehicle. Some products require an activation or registration fee, and a deposit or card pre-authorisation may be taken. Cars are usually collected at a branch or mobility store, with home delivery available from some providers at extra cost.
Business
Italian companies and holders of a partita IVA use long-term rental widely, and subscriptions offer a shorter, more flexible alternative for new hires, project work or seasonal peaks. Business offers are usually priced excluding VAT, and the deductibility of costs and VAT for company cars in Italy is subject to specific limits that depend on how the vehicle is used. Speak to a commercialista about how a subscription would be treated in your situation.
Not quite. Traditional long-term rental usually runs for 24 to 60 months, whereas subscriptions such as CarCloud or SIXT+ can be monthly or run for a few months, at a higher monthly price in exchange for flexibility.
Most providers include third-party liability (RC Auto), and many also include Kasko and theft cover with an excess. Check the exact level of cover and the excess before signing.
Only if you have the relevant permit or the vehicle meets the local access rules. ZTL rules are set by each municipality, so check before driving into a historic centre.
Requirements vary. Most providers ask for a codice fiscale and an Italian or EU payment card, and some may ask for proof of residence. Check with the provider.
Availability is best in large cities such as Milan, Rome and Turin. Some providers deliver nationwide or have branches across Italy, but collection points can be limited in smaller towns.
