Car Subscriptions in Sweden

Sweden was one of the first countries where car makers sold cars by monthly subscription, and the idea of a fixed monthly fee covering insurance, servicing and tyres is now familiar to many Swedish drivers.

The market has matured and reshaped since then: some early brand-led schemes have moved to longer, lease-like contracts, while rental companies and independent operators have filled the space for genuinely short commitments.

Today the choice ranges from month-to-month services from Toyota's KINTO and Avis to electric-only subscriptions from imove and regional players such as Novus Mobility in Skåne. Prices typically start around 5,000–6,000 kr a month for a small car. Seasonal tyres, the vehicle tax and comprehensive insurance are common inclusions, but the details (mileage, excess, congestion tax) vary, so it pays to compare like for like.

Sweden

Why choose a car subscription in Sweden?

Winter tyres sorted

Swedish law requires winter tyres in wintry conditions from December to March; most subscriptions include seasonal tyre changes and storage.

Insurance and vehicle tax bundled

Many plans include full (hel) insurance and the annual vehicle tax, so you avoid arranging cover and paying fordonsskatt separately.

No resale risk

With residual values of EVs and petrol cars shifting quickly, a subscription leaves depreciation with the provider rather than you.

Inspection handled

Periodic MOT-style inspection (besiktning) and scheduled servicing are usually arranged within the monthly fee.

Easy way to try an EV

Short commitments let you test life with an electric car and Sweden's charging network before committing to buy or lease long term.

Flexible for relocations

Month-to-month options suit people moving to Sweden, project workers or anyone waiting for a new car to be delivered.

Guide

How car subscriptions work in Sweden

You choose a car online, select a commitment period and a mileage band, and pass an identity and credit check, typically using BankID. Most providers require a Swedish personal identity number (personnummer) and a driving licence valid in Sweden; rental-based services such as Avis accept drivers from 19, while others set the minimum at 20–25. Deposits are uncommon, though some services take a card hold. Insurance is normally included with an excess, fuel or charging is your own cost, and congestion charges in Stockholm and Gothenburg are usually re-invoiced to you.

Things to check before you subscribe

  • Compare the included mileage and the per-kilometre charge for extra distance (often around 2 kr/km).
  • Check the insurance excess and whether a reduction is included or extra.
  • Confirm who pays congestion tax, parking fines and tolls, and how they are invoiced.
  • Read the binding period and notice rules; some 'subscriptions' are now multi-year contracts.
  • Check whether driving outside the Nordic countries is allowed and at what cost.

Business

Car subscriptions for business

Sole traders and companies can use subscriptions or short-term leases as a flexible alternative to traditional company leasing, for example to cover new hires or project peaks. VAT recovery and benefit-in-kind (förmånsvärde) rules for cars available for private use are specific and change over time, so the right treatment depends on how the car is used; check with your accountant or Skatteverket before signing.

Frequently asked questions

Is a car subscription cheaper than buying in Sweden?

Usually not on a pure cost basis over many years, but it removes depreciation risk and bundles insurance, tax, tyres and servicing. It tends to make most sense for shorter periods or when you value flexibility.

Do I need a Swedish personnummer?

Most providers ask for one because credit checks and BankID depend on it. Rental-based monthly services may accept other ID, so check with the provider if you are new to Sweden.

Are winter tyres included?

In most Swedish subscriptions, yes: summer and winter tyres, the seasonal change and storage are commonly part of the fee. Always confirm in the terms.

Who pays congestion tax?

The driver. Congestion tax in Stockholm and Gothenburg is normally charged to the provider as registered keeper and then passed on to you, sometimes with an admin fee.

Can I cancel at any time?

It depends on the provider. Month-to-month services such as KINTO Flex allow you to end after the first month, while some brand subscriptions now have fixed terms with longer notice periods.
