About BMW

BMW, short for Bayerische Motoren Werke, traces its roots to 1916 and began as a maker of aircraft engines in Munich. Motorcycles followed in the 1920s and its first car, a licence-built Dixi, arrived in 1928. After a difficult post-war period, the compact Neue Klasse saloons of the 1960s set the template for the sporty, rear-drive saloons the brand became known for. The famous blue and white roundel is based on the colours of the Bavarian flag.

Over the following decades BMW built its reputation on models such as the 3 Series and 5 Series, along with the high-performance M division. It also owns MINI and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. Today BMW sells a broad range of hatchbacks, saloons, estates and X-badged SUVs, and its electric line-up includes the iX1, iX3, i4, i5, i7 and iX, with new Neue Klasse-based models now arriving. Many of its cars are noted for balanced handling and strong engines, and the brand remains one of the UK's best-selling premium makes.

BMW on a car subscription

BMW is a popular subscription brand for drivers who want a premium car for a fixed period, such as during a job change or relocation. Electric models like the iX1 and i4 are often chosen to try an EV before committing, and they can suit company car users because of low Benefit-in-Kind tax. Check the mileage allowance, the insurance group and excess on M Sport and full M models, and whether home or workplace charging fits an electric BMW.
