About ONTO
ONTO was a UK electric car subscription service founded in 2017 by Rob Jolly and Dannan O'Meachair. One monthly fee covered insurance, servicing, repairs and access to thousands of public charge points. The standard allowance was 1,000 miles a month, cars were delivered across the UK, and subscribers could swap or hand back cars with monthly flexibility. By early 2023 it ran more than 7,000 EVs, from brands such as Volkswagen, Audi, Renault, Peugeot and Tesla, and was described as Europe's largest EV subscription business.
On 11 September 2023, Jonathan Lees and Gavin Maher of Teneo Financial Advisory were appointed joint administrators of Onto Holdings Limited, and further appointments were made over several subsidiaries. The administrators blamed a sharp fall in used EV values in early 2023, rising interest rates and pressure on household budgets. They also said ONTO could not raise more money from its shareholders, despite a large credit facility agreed earlier that year.
The administrators said existing customers would continue to be served while they looked for a solution. ONTO no longer offers subscriptions. Drivers who want a similar all-inclusive EV deal should compare current UK subscription providers.
