About Tesla
Tesla was founded in California in 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning, with Elon Musk joining as a major investor and later becoming chief executive. Its first car, the Roadster of 2008, used lithium-ion battery cells to show that an electric sports car could offer useful range and strong performance. Tesla's over-the-air software updates also changed expectations of how cars can improve after purchase.
The Model S saloon of 2012 and the Model X SUV that followed established Tesla as a serious manufacturer, while its Supercharger network helped make long-distance electric driving practical. The more affordable Model 3 and Model Y brought much higher volumes, and the Model Y has been among the best-selling cars in the world. Tesla ended production of the Model S and Model X in 2026, so its UK range now centres on the Model 3 and Model Y, which are sold directly rather than through dealers.
Tesla on a car subscription
Tesla is a popular choice for drivers who want to try a well-known EV before committing, and for company car users attracted by the low Benefit-in-Kind tax on electric cars. Access to Tesla's Supercharger network makes longer trips easier. Check the real-world range for your typical journeys, whether you have home charging, the mileage allowance and the insurance terms, as repair costs and insurance groups for Teslas can be higher than for some rivals.
